Parents with toddlers, families with dogs and cats, and homeowners with fish tanks and birds all want the same answer: is this going to hurt my family? Here's the honest, detailed answer — because you deserve it before we ever set foot in your home.

The Short Answer

When applied by a licensed professional following label directions, modern pest control products are safe for children and pets once dry. The key phrase is "once dry." During application and while products are still wet, children, pets, and adults should not be in treated areas. Most residential treatments have a re-entry period of 2-4 hours.

What Products Does City Best Pest Control Use?

All products used by City Best Pest Control are registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. We use:

• Pyrethroid-based residual insecticides for cockroaches, ants, and general pest control — these are synthetic versions of compounds found naturally in chrysanthemum flowers. They break down rapidly in sunlight and are specifically labeled as safe for indoor residential use.
• Professional-grade gel baits for cockroaches and ants — these are applied in tiny dots inside cracks and crevices, inaccessible to children and pets. The bait quantity is minimal and the active ingredient concentration is low.
• Tamper-resistant bait stations for rodents — all rodenticide is contained inside locked stations that children and pets cannot open. The bait is never loose or accessible.
• Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) — these disrupt the reproductive cycle of insects and have no mechanism of action that affects mammals. They're among the safest tools in our arsenal.

Special Considerations by Pet Type

Dogs and cats

Keep dogs and cats out of treated areas until dry (2-4 hours). Wash pet bedding that was in the treatment area. Food and water bowls should be removed or covered before treatment. Our technicians will advise you room by room.

Fish and aquatic pets

This is our most important special consideration. Pyrethroid insecticides are highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates even in very small concentrations. Before any indoor treatment, aquariums must be covered with a tight-fitting cover and the air pump/filter must be turned off to prevent drawing airborne product into the water. Tell us about fish tanks before we arrive — this is non-negotiable.

Birds and reptiles

Birds have sensitive respiratory systems and should be moved to another room (with the door sealed) or temporarily relocated during treatment. Reptiles can remain if their enclosure is covered and sealed.

Cats specifically

Cats are more sensitive to pyrethroids than dogs because they metabolize certain compounds differently. While label-rate application is considered safe, we recommend keeping cats out of treated areas for the full 4-hour drying period and wiping down any surfaces where cats walk after the 4-hour period.

What About Children?

Children should stay out of treated areas until they are fully dry, which typically takes 2-4 hours depending on humidity and application volume. After drying, the residue is bound to surfaces and is not considered a contact hazard at label-rate concentrations. We recommend:

• Washing children's hands before they eat or touch their face after returning home
• Washing any soft toys that were on the floor in treated rooms
• Wiping down high chairs and play surfaces before a child uses them after treatment

Can You Use Pest Control When Someone in the Home Has Asthma or Allergies?

Yes, with proper precautions. People with respiratory sensitivities should vacate the home during application and return only after full drying. Gel bait treatments — which produce no airborne product — are often a good option for households with severe asthma. Tell your technician about any medical conditions before treatment begins and we'll adjust the approach accordingly.
